Update on Canadian Obesity Advocacy Network

Jennifer is a registered dietitian and certified bariatric educator at the Ottawa Hospital Bariatric Centre of Excellence and a part-time consultant. She was a steering committee member on the 2020 Canadian Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines, lead author of the Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) Chapter of the CPGs,  co-author on the European MNT Guidelines for Adult Obesity as well as an advisory member for the International Obesity CPG adaptation committee. Jennifer is involved in several working groups and advocacy efforts, including coordinating the Canadian Obesity Advocacy Network, contributing to a National Obesity Care Framework with Obesity Canada and representing Canada at international policy and advocating networks. She is a chair and executive member of USA and Canadian dietetic groups and has been an invited speaker at national and international conferences/scientific meetings, university lectures and author of several publications. She is passionate about changing professional education and our healthcare system’s approach to how we understand and talk about weight and health. 


Learning Objectives:

This presentation will provide an overview of the Canadian Obesity Advocacy Network (COAN), it’s accomplishments to date and future initiatives that will support a National Obesity Care Framework in Canada. Participants will have a better understanding of the following:

  • Overview of the Canadian Obesity Advocacy Network (COAN)
  • Accomplishments and insights from COAN
  • A collaborative proof-of-concept initiative to implement obesity CPGs into practice
