Dr. Elizabeth Dettmer is licensed as a Clinical and Health Psychologist in Canada, the United States, and Botswana. She is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto, a Project Investigator with the SickKids Research Institute, and the Program Director of the SickKids Healthy Living Clinic (HLC) formerly known as the SickKids Team Obesity Management Program. Dr. Dettmer ‘s clinical work focuses on supporting children, adolescents, and their families develop and maintain healthy eating and activity practices while also attending to comorbid mental health issues and overall quality of life. She has extensive experience in the use of CBT, DBT, and MI and is frequently engaged to train other healthcare professionals in the application of these approaches. Dr. Dettmer’s research similarly focuses on the overlap of psychological factors with eating, activity, and weight management.
Objectives:
Attendees will learn to:
- Describe and identify the developmental stages of middle and late adolescence, ages 15 to 21, and how this impacts engagement in medical care.
- Utilize tools to enhance engagement with middle and late adolescents in bariatric treatments.
- Screen for mental health comorbidities more likely to occur in middle and late adolescents seeking bariatric care.
