Emotional and Binge Eating After Bariatric Surgery

Mr. Vincent Santiago is a fifth year PhD student in Clinical Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University. His research interests include eating disorders, the concept of “food addiction,” and psychosocial adjustment following bariatric surgery. He previously worked as a research coordinator and study therapist at Toronto Western Hospital’s Bariatric Surgery Program, delivering cognitive behavioural therapy to post-bariatric surgery patients with various concerns, including binge eating and emotional eating. He is currently a resident at London Health Sciences Centre in Health and Rehabilitation Psychology. 


Objectives:

  • Describe typical changes in binge eating and emotional eating from pre- to post-surgery
  • Discuss the prevalence of binge eating and emotional eating among post-operative bariatric patients
  • Explain the impact of post-operative binge eating and emotional eating on physical and mental health outcomes
  • List tools to assess binge eating and emotional eating
  • Discuss psychosocial treatment strategies to improve binge eating and emotional eating
